Aperture

Aperture is the amount of light that enters the camera which is determined by the size of the lens opening.

 The picture above has a shallow depth of field because it was taken with a larger aperture resulting in a blurred background and the foreground being in focus.

This picture was taken with a smaller aperture resulting in a larger depth of field with both the foreground and most of the background being in focus.
